Tips for IITJEE preparation along with class XI & XII Praveen Tyagi B.Tech (IIT Roorkee), MS (USA) Director Quest Tutorials Gaurav Mittal B.Tech (IIT Roorkee), MBA (IIM Lucknow) Director Quest Tutorials GENERATE INTEREST IN THE SUBJECTS Studies can be made as much fun as playing any sports or game. We like to play the games because of the challenge they pose and the sense of achievement they provide. Just as we play to win and take the failures in our stride, we can set challenges for ourselves in academics, which make us winners. * Set a challenging target, which makes the whole task an interesting exercise. * Break down the target into smaller, realistic and achievable goals. "I never did a days work in my life; it was all fun!" Thomas Edison about his hundreds of inventions PLAN YOUR WORK AND WORK YOUR PLAN Students have a lot of work to do in order to prepare for engineering along with school studies. Planning and managing time is critical for successfully taking on the challenge. * Divide the whole course on the basis of chapters, pages, problems, etc. * Make an assessment of the time it will take you based on your comfort in each topic. * Prepare a date-wise plan, which allows you to comfortably complete the preparation along with revision. * Set deadlines. While you can shift your plan a little bit here and there, it is extremely important that you stick to deadlines otherwise the whole plan will collapse. DEVELOP A ROUTINE * Make a daily timetable, which you plan to stick with. * Have regular study hour. Don't keep shifting study hours. This will help you in better concentration. * Changing topics or subjects results in better retention. Study 2-3 or more topics in one day. * You can take short 5-minute breaks to relax your mind and let your previous study settle in. Studying continuously for 2-3 hours results in poorer retention. * Study duration: During the last periods of preparation, it can be 8-10 hrs per day. The point is you do not feel burnt out or over-stressed. * Study in a quiet place with an attentive mind. Have a comfortable table-chair arrangement and then may be you can have couple of short rests if you feel tired. * Studying in front of TV or on bed wont help you much. * Stress is another problem caused because of over work. Sleep for, at least, 7 hours everyday. * Eat healthy, protein food, lots of fresh juice and any hot drinks like horlicks or boost. Avoid junk and fried food. * Some exercise is always good, especially in the morning. You mind will also be able to concentrate better due to proper blood flow. ORGANIZE THE STUDY MATERIAL There are endless books and materials available for JEE preparation. You need to be very selective and organized about your books and material. * For each subject, you need one set of textbooks for introduction. We recommend NCERT as they focus on understanding of the topic. * Then you need study material covering the topic at a higher level. * Always study books with a pencil and pen/paper. Mark the important points in the book, which you can review later quickly. KEEP THE PROPER BALANCE Dont spend too much time with one subject at the cost of others as all subjects carry equal weight. You need to be an expert in all the three subjects, each of which requires development of a different faculty. One kind of approach doesnt work for the other PHYSICS - CONCEPTUAL UNDERSTANDING * For expertise in physics you need to think and develop strong imagination and visualization. Have a very high curiosity to understand the phenomenon. You can break down a chapter into a few basic concepts and access everything through those concepts. * Students who dont like physics have are weak at visualization. CHEMISTRY - REMEMBERING AND RECALLING * For expertise in chemistry you need to become strong at memorizing and remembering. You need to spend a lot of time in reading the theory in the beginning. * Students who dont like chemistry do not like reading theory and get bored in doing the reading of the chapters. MATHEMATICS - SOLVING BY ATTEMPTING * For expertise in mathematics you need to practice solving the problems with pen and paper, as they need calculations and a number of steps. After getting access to a set of formulae and the basic concept behind a topic, you enjoy taking on newer challenges of solving problems. * Students who dont like mathematics do not like to solve by attempting with pen and paper. COACHING * Identify and join a coaching program that takes responsibility for the school performance a well as competitions. Coaching is just a system to provide guidance and regularity. It cannot guarantee results. Any coach can be only as good as the student. * Develop a strong relationship with your teachers with your commitment and work. A good teacher in coaching can make a tremendous difference to the speed of preparation. They will be enthusiastic to teach you, if you have a good attitude towards them. * Come prepared for the topic, which you are going to study in the class. The class will become a strong reinforcement rather than a tough introduction. You will be able to utilize your precious little time with the teacher in a far more effective manner. * Problems solved in the class do not add to learning. They are just an introduction to the technique. Solve each and every problem yourself by putting enough effort in the same later. * Review the class after attending it so that it gets strongly reinforced and you can retain it for a very long time. * Reviewing shortly after the class takes very less time, hardly 10-20 minutes. * Take the test as if you would be on the final JEE day when you give these exams. GET THE BASICS RIGHT Some students leave the school studies completely thinking that it is more important to prepare for competitions. This is extremely harmful, as the combined course of class XI & XII forms the foundation for the preparation of various competitions. * It is absolutely essential to read each and every chapter of the school textbooks. Find out the underlying concepts while studying. * Think of different situations or cases, which can crop up in your current topic of study and then how to apply what you are learning there. FOCUS ON APPLYING THE KNOWLEDGE Theory is very important and should be understood with care, but if you dont use it to solve problems immediately, you will soon forget it. By solving problems, your concepts also get clearer than by just reading the theory. * Look out for new techniques or concepts that you learn by solving a particular problem. Mark these with a star and come back to them later in your preparation. * Solve good problems instead of wasting time on solving simple problems just for increasing your number of problems solved. * Select problems which are equal or slightly above the level of JEE. * Target solving at least 85% of the problems without any help. * Continue the attempt to solve the problem even if it takes an hour or more. * Practice with objective type questions in the second phase of your preparation. * Short questions based on concepts are a good way to do the revision. * However, in the initial phase of understanding the topic, focus on subjective problems as they help in identifying problems and development of concepts. AVOID CONSULTING THE SOLUTIONS You need to open out your brain and need to struggle with the problems. It is this thinking part which stretches the mind to think more widely and deeply. * After you have solved a particularly good problem, then you may look at the solution, to see if there is an alternate or better method of solving the same problem. * If you really get stuck up with a problem, it is always better to ask your teacher or discuss with your friends then directly look at the solution. * Speed differentiates the toppers from the rest. Once you know which approach to follow, be fast in solving the steps. Lots of practice in problem solving improves this. * Accuracy or mathematical correctness is critical for scoring. Usually computation is required in almost all Physical Chemistry problems. ATTEMPT THE EXAMS PROPERLY * Deep breathing exercises make you relaxed and cool, very quickly. I was feeling quite tense before my JEE Maths exam, but 5-10 minutes of proper deep breathing changed my state substantially and I was able to attempt the exam with a very cool mind (which is important for solving such tough exams) * Mark the easier problems, solve them first and then try the rest. * Aim to solve the entire paper. In exceptional cases, you may need to be selective. * Be very neat and clean in your work (handwriting, diagrams etc.). When an examiner sees a very neat and clean (not blank) paper, he automatically feels positively inclined towards the paper. * So while making notes and in all your work (including rough), focus on improving your neatness, and over time it will improve. KEEP GOOD COMPANY * Good friends who are very sincere and intelligent can be a great boon. It provides the necessary feedback and keeps you motivated and you can also discuss with them regarding the preparation. Intelligent association is very necessary to know where you stand in your preparation. * Avoid bad company at all costs. And at the college level, it is available in plenty. It can seriously damage your preparation.
